To get more Google reviews for a restaurant or café in Dubai, verify your Google Business Profile, copy the review link and QR code Google gives you, and put that link in front of every guest at the moment the meal is done: on the bill, on a table card, on the menu and in any thank-you message. Then reply to the reviews you get, good and bad. Do it every service, for every guest, inside Google's rules: no rewards for reviews, no asking only happy tables, no staff quotas, no fake reviews. In the UAE, a false or insulting review can also be a criminal matter. This guide covers setup, timing, replies and the rules. It is general information, not legal advice.

Why do Google reviews matter so much for a Dubai restaurant?

Because many guests choose where to eat on Google Maps. They search "breakfast near me" or "shawarma JLT", see a list of pins with a star rating and a review count, and pick from the top few. The same rating looks more reliable with more reviews, and a page whose newest review is eight months old looks like a place that may have changed.

How many 5-star reviews does it take to move your rating?

More than most owners expect. The table assumes Google's rating behaves like a simple average of all ratings (Google does not publish its exact formula, so treat this as a guide).

Starting pointTargetNew 5-star reviews neededCheck
4.2 from 180 reviews4.326(756 + 130) ÷ 206 = 4.30
4.2 from 180 reviews4.5108(756 + 540) ÷ 288 = 4.50
4.2 from 40 reviews4.524(168 + 120) ÷ 64 = 4.50

180 reviews at 4.2 = 756 rating points; each 5-star review adds 5 points and one review. One bad week does not sink an established profile, and one burst of reviews does not fix it. Steady volume moves the number.

How do you set up your Google Business Profile first?

Reviews go to your Business Profile, so get that right before you ask anyone for anything.

  1. Claim and verify the profile at business.google.com. Google says you must verify the business before you can reply to reviews.
  2. Pick the right primary category, such as "Restaurant", "Café", "Lebanese restaurant" or "Coffee shop". It decides which searches you show up in.
  3. Use your exact trading name and address. Match the name on your trade licence and your storefront. In Dubai, add the building, street and community, and drop the pin exactly on your entrance; guests in big malls and towers get lost.
  4. Set opening hours, including special hours for Ramadan, Eid and public holidays. Wrong hours are a common cause of angry one-star reviews.
  5. Add a menu link and photos. Google lets food businesses show a menu link and menu photos. A link to an online menu that is always up to date beats a photo of a printed menu from two years ago.

Google's interface changes often, so the exact click path may differ from these labels. The help centre is the source to check.

Google gives every Business Profile a direct link that opens the review box, and a QR code for the same link. According to Google's help page:

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews (the share icon). Some versions of the interface call this "Ask for reviews".
  3. Select Copy to copy the link, or right-click the QR code and Save image as to download it.

Google notes that the QR code can only be generated from a computer browser, not from a phone. Google itself suggests putting the link or QR code on receipts, in thank-you emails, at the end of a chat, and printing the QR code for display in your store.

When and where should a restaurant ask for reviews?

Ask after the meal, not before it, and make it one tap or one scan. Here are the moments that make sense in a restaurant or café:

MomentHowWhat to say
Bill arrivesQR code printed on the bill or receipt footer"Enjoyed your meal? Review us on Google."
On the tableSmall card or sticker next to the menu QRSame line, same QR
Online menuA review link or card on the menu itselfOne line, no pressure
WhatsApp or Instagram thank-youPaste the review link"Thanks for coming. If you have a minute, a Google review helps us."
Guest says something niceStaff mention the card on the table"Thank you. If you'd like to say that on Google, the QR is on the card."

Ask everyone the same way, keep it to one line and a QR, and add an Arabic line if your guests read Arabic. Asking everyone is also the only way that stays inside Google's rules.

What does Google forbid when you ask for reviews?

Google's Maps content policy is specific about what merchants can and cannot do. Breaking it can get reviews removed and your profile restricted.

Rule: Google's policy says merchants may not offer incentives (payment, discounts, free goods or services) in exchange for a review or for changing or removing a negative one; may not discourage negative reviews or selectively ask only for positive ones; should not require or pressure guests to leave reviews while on the premises; and should not ask for specific content in a review. That includes setting staff a target number of reviews, or asking guests to name a staff member.

What this means on the restaurant floor:

Not allowedAllowed
"Show us your 5-star review and get a free dessert""Review us on Google" card on every table
10% off your next visit for a reviewAsking every guest the same way, with no reward

What happens if Google finds fake reviews on your profile?

Google's Business Profile help says that when it finds a business owner broke its fake engagement policy, it can remove the violating reviews and apply restrictions for a set period: the profile cannot receive new reviews or ratings, existing reviews are unpublished, and a warning is shown telling people fake reviews were removed. Google emails the owner before applying a restriction, and the owner can appeal. Google does not publish fixed durations. For a restaurant, losing all visible reviews for a period is far worse than any short-term rating gain.

How should you reply to Google reviews?

Reply to all of them, and keep each reply short. Google's own tips say to keep replies short and simple, not to send the same "thank you" to everyone, and not to use replies for deals or promotions. Your reply is public, appears as the business (not your personal name), and the reviewer is notified. Google says the guest can still change their review after reading your reply.

For a positive review: thank them by name if shown, mention one specific thing they liked, done.

"Thank you, Sara. Glad the kunafa landed well. See you at the next brunch."

For a negative review: answer within a day or two, stay calm, own what went wrong, and offer to fix it offline. Do not argue about details in public, and do not offer a voucher in exchange for removing the review: that is an incentive under Google's policy.

"Thank you for telling us, Omar. A 40-minute wait for mains on Friday is not acceptable and we are sorry. We have added a second person on the grill for Friday lunch. If you are willing, message us on WhatsApp so the manager can make it right."

For a review in Arabic: reply in Arabic if someone on the team writes it well; otherwise reply politely in English.

For a review that breaks the rules (spam, a competitor, someone who never visited, hate speech, profanity): report it. Google's steps are: open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, select the report icon next to the review, choose a reason and select Send report. You can track it in Google's Reviews Management Tool, where the status shows as "Decision pending", "Report reviewed - no policy violation" or "Escalated". If the report is rejected you can submit one appeal. Google is clear that you should not report a review just because you disagree with it. A fair one-star review stays up; your reply is your answer.

What does UAE law say about fake and negative reviews?

This is the UAE-specific part, and it cuts both ways. Keep it in mind before you buy reviews, write about competitors, or threaten a guest. Have a UAE lawyer confirm anything that matters.

For an owner: fake reviews about a competitor can lead to a criminal complaint, not just a Google penalty. If you are hit by a wave of fake one-star reviews, report them to Google and keep dated screenshots. An honest bad review is not grounds for a complaint.

From the platform: Kartee by Staks, our restaurant menu and QR ordering product, has a Google reviews feature on every plan. You paste your Google "Ask for reviews" link into Kartee once. Your digital menu then shows a "Review us on Google" card, guests using table ordering see a review prompt after their order is served, and you can download a review QR code to print on receipts or table cards. Kartee does not show your live Google rating on the menu, and it does not reply to reviews for you; that still happens in your Business Profile. The Starter plan is $19 a month ($190 a year) with a 14-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give a discount to guests who leave a Google review?

No. Google's policy lists payment, discounts and free goods or services in exchange for a review as fake engagement, and that applies even if you do not ask for a positive review. You can still run promotions; just do not tie them to reviews.

Can my staff ask guests to leave a review?

Yes, if they ask without pressure, without a reward and without asking for specific content. Google's policy says merchants should not set staff a number of reviews to collect or ask guests to mention a staff member, and should not require or pressure guests to review while on the premises. Pointing to the card on the table after a compliment is fine.

Can I delete a negative Google review?

No. Owners cannot delete reviews. You can reply publicly, and you can report a review that breaks Google's content policies (spam, conflict of interest, offensive content, someone who never visited). Google removes it only if it finds a violation, and you get one appeal if the first report is rejected.

Is a one-star review defamation in the UAE?

Usually not. An honest opinion about a real visit is generally not defamation. Reviews that insult, accuse someone of a crime, or spread false facts can fall under Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021. If you think a review crosses that line, keep screenshots, report it to Google, and speak to a UAE lawyer before doing anything else.

Put the same review card on every table and every bill, reply every day, and stay inside Google's rules. Start a 14-day free trial of Kartee to add a "Review us on Google" card to your digital menu and print a review QR for your receipts.
